Masterbatch
Masterbatch is a granule of polymer (plastic, rubber or elastomer) containing pigments or other additives dispersed at high concentration in a carrier material. The carrier must be compatible with the main polymer so it blends easily during moulding, giving the final product the colour and properties of the masterbatch. Typical carriers are PP, PE, PC, PET, PS and ABS.
Polymer masterbatches improve the thermal, mechanical, electrical and processing characteristics of the base polymer. White masterbatches, the most widely used type, contain 10 to 70 percent TiO₂ depending on whether the application is coating or whitening. Filler masterbatches contain 10 to 70 percent minerals. Colour masterbatches are produced to customer specification across a full spectrum of pigments.
